FAQ
Does the landlord have to issue the confirmation of residence?
Yes. The accommodation provider is required to assist with registration and confirm the move-in within two weeks (§ 19 Abs. 1 BMG). Failure to do so can result in a fine of up to €1,000.
What information must the landlord’s confirmation of residence contain?
The accommodation provider’s name and address, the owner’s name in the case of subletting, the move-in date, the property address and the names of everyone moving in (§ 19 Abs. 3 BMG). Rent details should not be included.
Is the landlord’s confirmation of residence available as a PDF?
Yes. The template uses your details to generate a PDF and a Word file. Empty fields appear as placeholders in square brackets, so you can also print the form and complete it by hand.
Can the property management company sign the confirmation?
Yes. The accommodation provider or a person authorised by them may issue the confirmation (§ 19 Abs. 1 BMG). Select “authorised person” in the template and enter the management company’s name.
Do I need a landlord’s confirmation of residence when moving out?
Generally, no. § 19 BMG refers only to moving in, and deregistration is only required if you are not moving into another home in Germany (§ 17 Abs. 2 BMG). The registration authority where you move to will require confirmation from your new landlord.
What happens if the landlord refuses to issue the confirmation?
The tenant must notify the registration authority without delay (§ 19 Abs. 2 BMG). The authority can then require the landlord to provide information and impose a fine.
Will my details be stored or transmitted?
No. The confirmation is created entirely in your browser. The PDF and Word file are generated on your device; names and addresses are neither stored nor sent to us or any third parties.
